hi, my name is caitlin... and i am a cell phone addict...

last week marked my third trip to dc with my students. over the course of the week, i found myself more and more familiar and knowledgeable about what i was seeing. however, i learned a lot this week as well. one of those things is the fact that i am addicted to my cell phone.

apple, you son of a bleep. you created a product that masks boredom and alleviates awkward situations. you allow me to listen to music while i check facebook and write emails and texts and do other things that make me freakishly connected to the world around me. and the moment i lost that glorious product, i realized how bad my addiction was.

the first step was denial. as i sat on the plane digging through my things, trying to find my phone, i was so sure it would be somewhere. despite emptying every pocket, i thought "maybe there is a secret pocket and it is still in there." but alas, you were not there. and it wouldnt really be a secret pocket if i used it, now would it. thus the next step... loss of reality.

"what time is it, ms. adelman?" so sorry, dear student, but i have lost the ability to tell time, for my time piece was likely left in the chicago airport. thus i have entered a zone where time is obsolete merely because my phone is not there to tell me differently.

"why did george washington raise his grandchildren?" excellent question, inquisitive 8th grader. however, because my phone contains all knowledge through that which is... wikipedia... i cannot answer that excellent question. now you must remain in the dark about said subject until you youself can look that up. (side note- still dont know, and i actually did look it up... too bad martha washington [the all-knowing actress] wasn't at mt vernon to ask... sigh)

"what is a good song to sing, ms adelman?" wow, what an amazing question. actually, i have an abundance of music we can file through on my... wait. never mind. no longer do i have a device that allows me to play music, or even just look it up. what is the song that is in my head... "walking buddyyy walking buddyyyy, do do do, do do do..." well thanks, one of the maddy(ie)s. now, not only do i have an annoyingly catchy song in my head, i have no iphone to give me a different song to sing incessantly.

and so, throughout the week in dc, i came across many different challenges that stemmed back to the mere fact that i had lost my cell phone. which is why, the very next day after my return, i went to the AT&T store, i took my mom's phone upgrade (thanks momma), and got myself a new one with all the trimmings, including a "find my iphone" option, which, come to think of it, wouldnt have helped much this past week. all it would have told me was what i already knew: it was gonja.

i also was able to go to a laser engraving party, where they make cases from bamboo (how greeeeen of me!)and laser engrave them with artwork. lookie!

mine is the birdie one... hurray!

and thus, the addiction can continue full force, the way apple intended. (cue content sigh/ eye twitch) :)
