have you ever been to a restaurant, and you're having a wonderful time, and you look over and there are two people who are not speaking and just eating quietly? and you think to yourself: man, they are miserable. half a meal later and they have exchanged only a few words. yep, that's jeff and me.
no, we are not miserable. we are actually really enjoying ourselves because we have a system. we quietly listen to the conversations of the people around us and exchange glances according to what we are hearing. and then we laugh and laugh later when they are either funny, pathetic, shallow, desperate, or overly TMI. and i will admit, i do the same thing by myself elsewhere. you already know i am a people-watcher. i am also a people listener. here is an excerpt from the north portland starbucks this morning:
"you want to know something gross????" the female cop says the the male cop while enjoying starbucks with a table of cops. "so when i change the baby's diaper, his older sister likes to see what's going on. and every time, i mean EVERY time, she sees me changing the poopy diaper, she throws up. EVERYWHERE. you want to know how hard it is to deal with a poopy diaper AND a puking kid? MAN." the expression on the male cop's face after she finished this enlightening story was.... priceless.
"my parents want to have the college talk with me..." the high school says to her friend jules on the phone. "... and i am scared with every fiber of my being. i mean, i have no idea where i want to go. and i feel like an indian outcast because my heart isn't set on harvard or stanford! like, i have no clue what i want to do.... jules?! juuuules? oh there you are.... NO! NONONONO! you can't have your heart set on stanford! megan goes there!... haha i know, totaly bitch right? oh my god, i totally shouldnt swear, im in starbucks right now. but anyway, what am i going to DO?! early admission is SO HARD!!!" ..... lord, child. your worries are... well, yeah, they're so high school. stanford or harvard.... hmmm toughie.
so be careful, because that couple in the restaurant that you think is miserable may just be eavesdropping on you and thoroughly enjoying your "private" conversation... :D
