just so you know...

ive been married before.

yup. just thought i would be upfront now that i am engaged to the most awesomest guy ever. there was a time where you didnt need to know me too long and i was putty in your hands. it was a short-lived marriage that caused pain and didnt follow rules, but at least his mother approved.

his name was matthew. we liked each other, and we found a pocket new testament, a rubber band and made it official.

i was five. he lived down the street from me. i remember he had an older brother who was a teenager, and he scared me. i think teenagers in general scared me. that and blow dryers.

so we decided we liked each other. i think we kissed, i dont remember. and we grabbed one of those pocket bibles that i used to carry around with me because i looked official. and we wrapped a rubber band around my index finger, and lo and behold... we were legit.

Once the rubber band started to cut off circulation in my finger, our fairytale romance came to an end. and twenty years later, the guy, the proposal, and the rubber band got an upgrade.

after picking our anniversary weekend to go see my friends in sacramento, since it was the only time i could, we decided to celebrate when i got back. after spending some time with my good friends, i was ready to meet up with some others for happy hour friday night, the night of our anniversary. my friend frances sent me a verrrry specific text telling me where to go. i walked into the rose garden in front of the capitol building, thinking it odd that my friends weren't there to meet me yet. out of the corner of my eye came a guy in a sports coat (in 90 degree weather, no less!), and suddenly that guy was down on one knee. he had ALL my sacramento friends in on it, and it was awesome.

after an amazing meal at sacramento's ruth chris, the spot we had picked out for our "belated" anniversary celebration back home, we watched crappy TV, and i told him the best thing, the thing i loved about being engaged, was that nothing had changed but what was on my hand. which, by the way, does not cut off my circulation.

  1. This is my favorite part: "and i told him the best thing, the thing i loved about being engaged, was that nothing had changed but what was on my hand. which, by the way, does not cut off my circulation."

Wish I could have seen you. :( So happy for you guys!
